control activities, food and mouth disease control, supply
of animal vaccines, and agricultural inputs for improved

	    medicines and medical care.
- UN seeks $39.9m for emergency aid to
      Iraq
- Baghdad Observer, 30
September 1996. The United Nations is appealing for $39.9
million to meet the most essential needs of the vulnerable
population of Iraq for the next three months. Emergency
requirements until the oil-for-food deal signed between
Iraq and the UN, May 20, which allows for the sale of
limited quantities of Iraqi petroleum for humanitarian
	    purposes, is implemented.
- New statistics on Iraqi deaths as a result
      of the sanctions
- Arabic News, 30 December
1999. 1.4 million Iraqis of all ages have died during the
past nine years because of the embargo imposed on
Iraq. Mortality rate among infants reached 108 per each
1,000 births, and mortality among women of reproductive
age has reached 296 for each 100,000 births.
- Suffering under sanctions in Iraq
- By Deirdre Sinnott, South News, 21 November 1997. That
the sanctions against Iraq are a weapon of mass
destruction is evident in Basra. Visits to two
	    hospitals. Conditions horrifying. Health case
	    system. Water and disease.
- Under Iraqi Skies, a Canvas of
      Death
- By Edward Cody, Washington
Post, 16 June 2000. Missile attacks a recurring
event in the Iraqi countryside, wounding and killing
civilians. Civilian deaths and injuries are a regular part
of the little-discussed U.S. and British air operation
over Iraq. U.N. survey: civilian casualties
routine. Speculation that it amounts to an Islamic
	    genocide.
