as a whole
- In the first step since 1995, Maghreb union
committee meets in Algeria
- ArabicNews.com, 12 May 1999. Meeting next week in
Algiers is the first step of its sort since freezing work
of the federation’s establishments in 1995. The

has been viewed in Rabat and other Arab Maghreb states as
an encouraging element toward opening the dialogue and
reviving interest in the Arab Maghreb construction.
- Maghreban officials in Algeria for revival
of Arab Maghreb Union
- ArabicNews.com, 18 May 1999. Officials from the five
North African countries forming the Arab Maghreb Union
(UMA) call for the revival of the union that they
described as an inevitable strategic choice. Recent
developments in the Maghreban region, especially the
election of a new president in Algeria and the settlement
of the Lockerbie issue, are seen as potential factors for
the reactivation of the Maghreban process.
- Libya’s Triki Speaks Of Progress In
UMA Revival Efforts
- By Bouazza Ben Bouazza, PANA, 22 July 2000. Significant
efforts are being made to re-launch the five-nation Arab
Maghreb Union (UMA). The UMA, which was created in 1989 by

fallen into a stalemate since 1995, primarily because of
differing positions between Rabat and Algiers over the
Western Sahara conflict.

Washington. Madrid veut ressusciter ses anciennes
colonies
- Libération (Casablanca),
24 May 2002.
