Partizansk Coal Miners Continue Unannounced Strike

By Leonid Vinogradov, World News Review, 16 May 1997

VLADIVOSTOK, May 16 (Itar-Tass) -- Two thousand coal miners in Partizansk continue their unannounced strike which they had begun on May 1.

According to reports received by Itar-Tass from this city, they have ceased work as a protest against a delay of six months in payment of their salaries. Out of the four functioning collieries only the mine "Avangard" is producing coal, but instead of consumers it is sending its production to depots. 186 coal miners of Partizansk left for Vladivostok today to participate in a protest meeting in front of the Territorial administration building there. According to press-secretary of the share-stock company "Primorugol" Boris Krivolapov, about one thousand five hundred miners are getting ready to take part in this action. Workers of other Vladivostok-based enterprises, as well as an informal public organization are supporting them. The latter are blocking roads as a mark of protest against cutting electricity supply. According to reports received from various sources, electricity supply was cut in separate areas of Vladivostok since 06:00 hours today. There is shortage of fuel in power generation plants of the Maritime Territory, because no coal is being loaded for consumers by all coal-producing cities and towns of the Territory.
