Okinawans on hunger strike over SDF deployment

Kyodo News, 21 November 2001

Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at 19:00 JST NAHA About 30 Okinawa citizens began a 32-hour hunger strike on Wednesday to protest the dispatch of Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to lend noncombat support to the U.S. military operations in Afghanistan.

The hunger strikers, including members of an Okinawa-based peace movement, held their protest at an open space in front of the Okinawa prefectural government office in Naha. They are expected to stay there until Thursday evening, according to strike organizers.
