Dear friends: I would greatly appreciate if you would suggest some good well researched secondary references on 'Bushido' (The Way of the Warriors). Even primary source references is also welcome. One of my students is struggling to write a bibliographic essay on it and my field is Modern South Asia. So any help will be a savior.

See the extensive references in John Dower and Timothy George, _Japanese History and Culture from Ancient To Modern Times: Seven Basic Bibliographies_ , Marcus Weiner, Princeton, 1995, pp. 62-70, 128-129. An earlier version will have similar, but not updated, references.

An interesting new study of samurai (and bushido) is Eiko Ikegami's book *The Taming of the Samurai* (Harvard, 1995).

For Bushido, a good introduction written for Western readers is Nitobe Inazo, _Bushido: The Soul of Japan_ (New York: Putnam, 1905). Nitobe (1862-1933) was a Christian convert, however, and that influences somewhat his view of Bushido.
