MACAO, August 24 (Xinhua)—The estimated population stood at 440,000 in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on June 30, 2,700 more than the figure on the same day in the previous year, an official sample survey shows.
Figures released Friday by the Statistics and Census Services show that a total of 748 babies were born and 328 people died in Macao in the second quarter of this year. In the meantime, there were 234 new marriages.
The number of legal immigrants from China's inland to Macao reached 726 in the three-month period. By the end of June, a total of 24,727 non-local people had been granted the right to reside in Macao.
Macao started to take a census as of Thursday, which targets all the residents including locals and non-locals. The event is held once a decade.
Macao's population growth in the year 2000 was 1.5 percentage points lower than that of 1999, the sources said.
