Cantonese opera diva sings for Malaysian charities

The Straits Times, 15 November 2000

PETALING JAYA -- Legendary Cantonese opera actress Hoong Sin Looi displayed her superb talent and showmanship during a charity show here.

As elegant as ever, Hoong, who was wearing a long turquoise gown and red-rimmed glasses, sang Chu Kong Liang Chan in praise of the Chu Kong River in China.

That song request from her fans earned RM41,000 (S$19,000) for the Yin Ngai Musical Arts Association which organised the two-day event in aid of Hospis Malaysia and several other charities.

Her rendition of Li Zhi Soong resulted in a donation of RM50,000.

Ms Hoong, 73, was possibly one of the most famous fah tan (Chinese opera stars) in China and Hongkong way back in the 1950s.

Her real name is Kwan Kin Lim and Hoong Sin Looi (Red Thread Girl) was a stage name given to her by her teacher.

Born in Guangzhou in 1927, she started performing at 12. Between 1947 and 1955, she acted in more than 70 movies.
