[CND, 06/07/01] A new series of textbooks, the New Chinese Readings series, for secondary students were published to offer students different views, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
The books emphasize humanities and human heritage, rather than politics, said QIAN Liqun, a Beijing University professor and one of the editors. For example, the Declaration of Independence and Declaration of the Rights of Man are put alongside the Communist Manifesto, stories from the Bible and the Shanhaijing alongside Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, to encourage independent thinking.
The series, consisting of 12 volumes for the 12 terms of secondary-school study, was published by the Guangxi Education Publishing House. (Jian-Min LI)
