***** SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION AND CONDITIONS OF USE *****

This guide was created to serve the needs of scholars, students, and
interested individuals in finding and using internet resources dealing
with the Middle East. In this document the Middle East is defined as
broadly as possible. It includes:

         MAURITANIA IN THE WEST,
         PAKISTAN IN THE EAST,
         SOMALIA IN THE SOUTH, AND
CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS IN THE NORTH.

This document is correct to the best of my knowledge but there are
undoubtedly errors. I would appreciate any corrections. Please send
them to me at the above E-Mail address.

In the section on Mailing Lists, now located in Parts II and III of
this guide, the reader will note that the descriptions vary from
nothing at all to a very detailed description. It is impossible for me
to subscribe to all of the mailing lists so I would appreciate it if
any subscribers would send me a brief description of the lists that are
not described, partially described, or described inaccurately. With
your help this resource guide will be useful for everyone.

***** SECTION 6: USENET NEWSGROUPS *****

The following newsgroups deal with issues of concern to the geographical
boundaries that I have set for this resource guide. These are the
newsgroups that are in my news resource file at the present time. I am
sure I missed some of the groups (out of 3000) that deal with the
region. Please send me the names of the ones that I missed. These are
also the groups with world-wide distribution. There may be many other
newsgroups that deal with the region from a local point of view. I will
not include those here because they have only limited benefit.

To access any of these you must use a Newsreader such as tin, rn, trn,
or nn. Have your program subscribe to the newsgroup (usually by typing:
g newsgroup name). The listing here lists the newsgroup name in
lowercase letters on the left and a description in uppercase letters on
the right.

***** SPECIAL NOTE *****
In previous editions of this guide I have listed resoruces on Isreal,
Judaism, and Judaica. In this edition I have deleted the few that I
listed for two reasons:

1. Inherent limitations in gopher and some E-Mail programs (storage and
receipt of no more than 32k of information) some data was being lost or
damaged.

2. The paltry few resources that I listed did not do justice to the
more than 117 E-Conferences that deal with Isreal, Judaism, and Jewish
Life that are found on the internet.

Please consult the "GLOBAL JEWISH NETWORKING HANDBOOK" by Dov Winer
listed in the bibliography in Part I of this guide and the JERUSALEM
ONE GOPHER SERVER described in Section 2, Part I entitled GOPHER AND
WWW SERVERS. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause but
this action was inevitable.
