traditional Maya lands in Southern Belize and need for
full participation of the Maya people in all development
plans for the region. The Maya fear that a rapid
development resulting from the highway will further
threaten their forests and their livelihoods.

- South and Meso American Indian Rights Center (SAIIC), 24
December 1997. The IDB decision on funding for Belize has
been postponed until January 7. Belize is in the process
of granting permits for oil exploration on traditional
Maya lands in the Toledo District, including the Columbia
River Forest Reserve.
