Attorney Leonard Weinglass presented incontrovertible evidence in support of the 19 constitutional violations raised in Mumia Abu-Jamal's 400-page Post Conviction Relief Application (PCRA), while also arguing that Mumia was framed by the police and the prosecution. Substantive issues not addressed by the court included suppression of evidence, ineffective assistance of counsel, and inadequate funds for investigation and expert testimony. At a press conference in Philadelphia today, Pam Africa of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal said "Sabo's decision comes as no surprise. His ruling may be legal, but that doesn't make it right. As with all his actions in this case, this ruling will only fuel people around the world to speak out for what is right - that is, a new trial for Mumia!" "The revelations about the rampant Philadelphia police corruption exposed in recent weeks have only bolstered Mumia's substantiated claims that police intimidation silenced witnesses who said Mumia was innocent and forced others to finger him," comments Jane Henderson, co-coordinator of Equal Justice USA. "Sabo's dismissal of each and every claim Mumia has raised further demonstrates his pro-police bias." A former Philadelphia County under-sheriff, Sabo has sentenced twice as many people to death (32 total) than any other judge in the country - all but two of whom are people of color. 11 of his death penalty cases have been reversed on appeal. Equal Justice USA and International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal form the backbone of the international campaign being waged to win Mumia a new trial and expose Philadelphia's wanton use of the death penalty.
