An interesting novel about two affranchaise mulattos who are in the theater. This novel is useful to get a picture of the interaction of whites and affranchaise, especially mulattos, on the eve of the revolution. Situated from about 1785-1791.

Bob, I can add several items (and I do not see the relevance of all items above to the topic). Also, Marie Chauvet's historical novel is actually deeply embedded in the history of the last decade of Saint Domingue (with references to theatrical history back into the 1760s) and the two sisters, Minette and (I forget the younger one's name) are historical figures, the first actor/singers of color to appear on stage in Saint Domingue. Marie got most of her documentation from Jean Fouchard's LE THEATRE A SAINT DOMINGUE (PaP: Deschamps).

The titles published in Montreal may be available from Patricia Reher Francis in New York. The fact that texts are in French should not be a problem for any researchers in music--and they also include lyrics in kreyol and french (usuallY), scores, and explanations of the children's games (often referred to by Haitian writers).

There is also Gerdes Fleurant's doctoral thesis, recently published by Greenwood Press, a study of Rada rhythms in Vodou (if I remember correctly)--you could query him for exact title.
