WORKERS WORLD: LABOR NEWS ROUND-UP 4/13/95
March 28 was the 14th day of a regional strike by 1,500 state rail workers in the south of Peru. Two hundred of the workers are now on a mass hunger strike to protest police repression in the city of Arequipa.
Union leader Juan de Dios Arana said in an interview on Radioprogramas del Peru that 1,500 workers in the Arequipa, Puno and Cuzco regions were demanding raises and other concessions from the state's National Railroad Co. "Our salaries have been frozen for four years," he said. "There is a total indifference and insensitivity on the part of the company."
Rail workers make $73 a month.
