Museum Returns Bone Fragments to Cubans

Seattle Times, [11 July 2002]

The Smithsonian Institution has returned fragments of bones from seven Taino natives to Cuba for reburial by their descendants. The box of bone fragments was handed to members of a native community from Baracoa, where they will be buried according to traditional Taino ritual. Many welcome this as a positive move that will strengthen relationships among Cuban and American scientists, despite the political problems between their countries.

The initiative is part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian program to return human remains and ceremonial objects to native communities throughout the Americas.
