PRESS RELEASE: Taino Indians to Sign an Historic Declaration on March 27, 1998 at New York's City Hall

New York City: Taino Indian Leaders representing US and Caribbean indigenous organizations and groups will gather for the inauguration ceremony of the United Confederation of Taino People and official signing of the Confederation's Declaration, on March 27, 1998, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Council's Chambers of City Hall in Manhattan. The Declaration, in its, preamble begins with We the Taino People, and conttains eight articles whose provisions seek to protect, defend and preserve Taino cultural heritage and Spiritual tradition - while establishing basic guidelines for organizational structure, process and accountability.

With the establishment of the United Confederation of Taino People the descendants of the first Native Americans who greeted Christopher Columbus in 1492, will present a unified voice to address the many issues which concern contemporary Taino People. Some of these issues include the correction of misconceptions about the Taino, the repatriation of ancestral remains, religious intolerance, cultural exploitation and the promotion of new dialogue between theTaino People and the international, national and loca communities.

A presentation to the United Confederation of Taino People will be made by the Honorable Councilman, Jose Rivera and Special guest invited to attend the event, are to include United Nations Representatives, various Museum officials,representatives of Non- Governmental Oranizations and other Indigenous Dignitaries.
