Moratorium placed on iGoli 2002

Sapa, 28 june 2000

Johannesburg - Over 10,000 workers attended a rally at Johannesburg's library gardens to celebrate a moratorium that was placed on the implementation of all Igoli 2002 plans, SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) spokeswoman Anna Weekes said on Wednesday.

Samwu and the Independent Municipal and Allied Union (Imatu) staged a sit-in at the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council offices last Thursday in protest against the privatisation and restructuring plan.

The moratorium means the privatisation of the zoo, bus services, civic centre and fresh produce market, scheduled for Saturday, would not go ahead.

A record of understanding, endorsing Samwu's position, was currently being tabled in a meeting with the African National Congress.

She said Samwu would go before the Bargaining Council on Thursday morning to ratify the amended record of understanding and make it legally binding.

The document was drawn up by the African National Congress, Congress of SA Trade Unions and Samwu.

The rally ended just after 2pm.
