Subject: Second Anniversary of Chris Hani's Death

ANC Statement on the 2nd Anniversary of the death of Chris Hani

7 April, 1995

April 10 1995 marks the second anniversary of the death of one of the greatest revolutionaries our country has ever produced - Martin Thembisile Chris Hani.

The Hani family and the tripartite alliance will unveil a tombstone in his honour on Sunday 15 April, at 9h30 Elspark Cemetery in Boksburg. Amongst the speakers will be ANC President Nelson Mandela, SACP General-Secretary and Cosatu leaders. Further details on this service will be announced during the course of next week. Several of our provinces will be marking this day with commemoration services during this weekend.

Slain at the prime of his life, Chris Hani was taken to the hearts of all our people as a nation because he lived so that we may be free. He touched the very heart of millions of our people because he knew our pain and eased it by giving us hope, courage and a way forward.

We continue to draw inspiration from the bravery and vision of Chris Hani in facing the difficult problems of housing, hunger, desease, poverty, crime, ignorance and humiliation created by decades of apartheid tyranny.

The ANC is fully aware that such a mammoth task cannot be taken by government alone. Only through building national unity and drawing on the wealth of our human resources, the courage and strength of all our people can we lay a firm basis for a prosperous future of our country.

On this second anniversary, the ANC recommits itself to the ideals and vision for which Chris Hani lived and died for. Coming at a critical time in the history of our country, let his memory spur us to mobilise millions of our people behind the banner of peace, reconstruction and to vote for local government elections. We cannot afford to fail Chris.

Let us all remember Chris Hani in every corner of our country with the dignity and respect befitting his heroism and dedication, in the service of all our people.

Subject: Unveiling of Chris Hani's Tombstone

The family of the slain SACP/ANC leader Chris Hani and the tripartite alliance will unveil a tombstone in his honour on Saturday 15 April, at 9h30 Elspark Cemetery in Boksburg. Speakers will include ANC President Nelson Mandela, SACP General-Secretary Charles Nqakula and Cosatu leaders.

Slain at the prime of his life, Chris Hani was taken to the hearts of all our people as a nation because he lived so that we may be free. He touched the very heart of millions of our people because he knew our pain and eased it by giving us hope, courage and a way forward.

Today millions of our people bear witness to the dawn of freedom, peace and justice and the election of a new democratic government for which Chris Hani fought and died for. True to our commitment to Chris Hani, we have jointly begun the process closest to his heart: the reconstruction and development programme to rid our country of the legacies of apartheid.

We continue to draw inspiration from the bravery and vision of Chris Hani in facing the difficult problems of housing, hunger, disease, poverty, crime, ignorance and humiliation created by decades of apartheid tyranny.

The ANC is fully aware that such a mammonth task cannot be undertaken by government alone. Only through building national unity and drawing on the wealth of our human resources, the courage and strength of all our people can we lay a firm basis for a prosperous future of our country.

Let us all remember our beloved Chris Hani in every corner of our country with the dignity and respect befitting his heroism and dedication, in the service of all our people.
