Policemen Disperse Women ‘Praying for Peace’

TOMRIC Agency, 11 October 2000

Zanzibar - A group of women allegedly praying for peace in response to a call for all Muslims to pray in groups or in mosques for peace during the election campaign in Zanzibar, were yesterday dispersed by the police force.

The women were dispersed by police at the Zanzibar residence of the Civic United Front (CUF) Isles presidential candidate, Mr. Seif Shariff Hamad, at midnight.

The police said the women were not conducting prayers. Commander Ramadhan Mgeni said they were found in groups around a mosque near Hamad's house a time when prayers were not in progress.

However, CUF, in a statement also signed by Awadhi Said, campaign manager for Hamad, said the women were praying for peace and were not found outside the mosque as police claimed.
