The military events in general in
Iraq (2002 - April 2003)
- US drop 500kg J-Dam bomb on Basra
- The Guardian, [25 March
2003]. A US warplane has dropped a 500kg satellite-guided
J-Dam bomb on a civilian building in Basra, British forces
make
a big push
or the city, using heavy
artillery. Our forces now surround Basra and we are
obviously assessing the situation before we commence
operations to take out the non-regular militia.
- Basra in flames
- Islamic Republic News Agency (Iran), 4 April 2003. Nine
oil wells in Basra have been set ablaze by heavy coalition
bombardments of the city in the past few days. The city
has been under continuing air raids, missile and artillery
barrage attacks by US-led forces more than any other
southern Iraqi urban area since the outbreak of the
current war.
- The New Humanitarianism: Basra as a
Military Target
- By Rahul Mahajan, Nowar Collective, [6 April
2003]. Iraq’s desperate humanitarian situation has
suddenly become a retroactive justification for the war,
even for the attacking of civilian targets. The need to
get aid into Basra has apparently prompted a British
military spokesperson to designate it as a
legitimate
military target.
- Basra Still Without Water, Electricity And
Medical Aid
- OANA/RIA Novisti, 13 April 2003. Water and electricity
are supplied only to several districts of the city,
primarily to the places of the accommodation of British
troops. In the daytime British soldiers patrol the streets
of the city to provide security. However, at night, armed
groups of looters are active in several districts of the
city.
