Iraq protests to UN over airspace violations

By Atheer F. al-Abadi, The Baghdad Observer, No. 8536, 22 May 1996

Baghdad— Iraq has lodged a new protest with United Nations over the continued violations of its airspace by American and British warplanes for pro- vocative and reconnaissance purposes in many parts in Iraq.

In a letter on May 14 to the UN Secretary-General, Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf said that warplanes violated Iraqi airspace seven times over the period April 26-28 coming from their bases in Kuwait. The warplanes dropped incindary Phosphoric material with the aim of burning wheat fields. They also dropped hostile leaflet on the towns of Dear, Nashwa and Basra airport.

Earlier on May 15, the Iraqi envoy had handed over a protest letter to the UN Secretary-General over continued violations of American, British and French airplanes for provocative and reconnaissance pur- poses and throwing flare bombs.

The letter said that the western warplanes carried out 1059 sorties over the period April 1-30 in many pans in south and north Iraq.

The UN Secretary-General was demanded to warn these three states to halt these operations which otherwise can be interpreted as a threat to Iraq's sovereignty.

The letter emphasises Iraq's right to claiming legal compensations for any injuries sustained by the Iraqi people as due to these flagrant actions of aggression.

Moreover, on May 16, Iraq made a similar protest with the United Nations over the continued violations of its airspace by American and British warplanes for provocative, reconnaissance and aggression purposes in many parts in soutn and north Iraq.

A protest memorandum to the UN-Secretary General Dr. Botrus Ghali, said American warplanes threw hostile leaflet on the towns of Shirsh and Shalhat Hassan.

The UN Secretary-General was asked to intervene as to bring a halt these aggressive operations that constitute a serious threat to Iraq's sovereignty and violate the UN Charter.

Iraq demanded that these letters be circulated as UN Security Council document.
