South News, 11 December 2001

DOHA—DECEMBER 11—WAFA—Representatives of the world's 1.2 billion Muslims set up a ministerial panel on Monday to urge the United States and the European Union to press Sharon and the Israeli government to end its on going aggression on the Palestinians and revive the Middle East peace process.

The urgent meeting of Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), which held in Doha, Qatar Monday, urged the UN Security Council, as the international body basically responsible for keeping nternational security and peace, to instantly stop the Israeli aggression and to rapidly send international observers to ensure international protection for the Palestinian people, in correspondence with the international resolutions and agreements agreed upon within the Palestinian Israeli peace process framework.

The communiqui, issued at the conclusion of the 10th extraordinary meeting, stressed commitment to the previous Islamic conferences' decisions related to the Palestinian cause, Jerusalem and the Arab Israeli conflict.

The meeting condemned the Israeli bombing of the Palestinian cities, villages, refugee camps and the Palestinian National Authority headquarters.

The meeting urged USA to activate the positive elements of its special vision pertaining the solution of the Palestinian cause and the Arab Israeli conflict, based on the Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, by ending the Israeli occupation, stopping settlement in the Palestinian territories and establishment of independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. It called for the implementation of this vision within a specific mechanism and time table.

The meeting expressed rejection to mixing terror with the peoples right, Particularly the Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian peoples, to resist occupation as a right guaranteed by international conventions.

The meeting condemned Israeli state sponsored terror practiced in the occupied Palestinian and Arab territories.

The meeting decided to form a follow up committee to formulate an Islamic peace initiative aiming at highlighting the Islamic unified stand and to mobilize support to the just cause of instant stopping of Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, and withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the Palestinian territories to their position prior to Sept. 28, 2000 and from all occupied Arab territories to June 4th 1967 borders.
